Pichwai is a 400-year-old devotional painting tradition that originated in Nathdwara near Udaipur, Rajasthan. The term Pichwai derives from pichh (back) and wai (hanging), referring to its placement behind temple idols. These paintings depict Lord Krishna in the form of Shrinathji, illustrating episodes from his life as well as temple rituals and seasonal festivities. Shrinathji is rendered with distinctive features—an elongated form, large expressive eyes, and a broad nose —mirroring the temple idol. Rich in detail and symmetry, Pichwais often incorporate floral motifs, animals, geometric patterns, and the use of pure gold. Beyond their visual splendour, they serve as narrative and devotional tools, with different paintings displayed according to the ritual calendar
