Meenakshi Kalyanam (The Divine Wedding)

The Divine Wedding Tanjore

Meenakshi Kalyanam celebrates the sacred marriage of Goddess Meenakshi and Lord Shiva in his form as Sundareswarar, a union central to the devotional traditions of Madurai. In this circular composition, the divine couple sit beneath an elaborate temple pavilion, adorned with crowns, jewellery and floral garlands. Meenakshi’s green complexion distinguishes her beside Sundareswarar, while smaller figures occupy the surrounding architectural niches. Gold ornament fills the composition, balanced by rich red and green drapery against a dark ground. The seated pair convey a quiet intimacy within the splendour of the setting. Read symbolically, their union brings divine power and grace into harmony, expressing the blessings of companionship, abundance and continuity through the familiar language of marriage.
